About 50 Nigerians were run over by a bus during a robbery incidence yesterday, which left 14 people dead.
Police commander Sunday Maku said it happened around 5:00 a.m. Tuesday. An unidentified bus ran over them after they were forced to lie down on the road by armed robbers at Zariagi, on the Okene-Lokoja road, Kogi State.
“The armed robbers blocked one side of the single lane road with their vehicle and were operating on the other side of the road. They stopped the luxury bus and asked the occupants to come down and lie down facing the ground, and started robbing them of their money, phones and other valuables. The corpses were taken to the hospital by the rescue team of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC).”
But, the Lokoja Sector Commander of the FRSC Sunday Maku, who confirmed the accident, said only 14 persons died in the accident, while the driver escaped unhurt. “Among the 14 that died were 10 male adults, three female adults, and one male child while the driver survived the incident,” he said
According to him, the armed robbers ran away from the scene immediately after the bus ran over the passengers.
Maku said the corpses were deposited at the State Specialist Hospital and the Federal Medical Center in Lokoja while the driver of the victims and the e vehicle are with the police.
He advised motorist and passengers to avoid night journeys because of its attendant effect, saying that apart from robbery incident accident could also happened.
