“Police Too Passive About Bike Robberies” – Lagos Residents

The regular occurrence of armed robbery attacks by men in commercial motorcycles popularly called Okada, has become a source of concern for Lagos residents who have started having doubts about the competence of the police in arresting the situation.

Their activities is now a major threat to passers-by and commuters on the streets and bus stops. It has risen to a frightening dimension that seams uncontrollable for the police. Despite similar alarming incidents being brought to the knowledge of the police, the activities of the gun men still persists.

One of the victims, Mr. Yemi Olayinka, who recently had the terrible experience when he ran into a gang at gun point while stepping out of the gate of the estate where he resides along the Murtala Muhammed Airport road in Lagos. He was said to have been robbed of his bag containing a laptop, money, other valuable documents, and accessories.

Similarly, a reporter was attacked by a four-man gang at gun point on Kudirat Abiola Way, at about 7:00 in the morning. They robbed him of his bag, which contained a laptop, digital camera, digital recorder, ATM card, monies and other valuables. Report says quite a number of victims, who have suffered pains, setbacks and losses at similar incident, made like comments about the inability and inadequacy of the Police in curbing the menace to a reasonable extent in the society, describing the Nigerian Police as “not being up to the task”.

On reporting to the Alausa Police Station, an attendant at the counter described the issue to the complainant as stale, saying it could not be handled.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Samuel Jinadu, while responding to the issue, said the Police have so far arrested a number of suspects, while still strategizing on how to curb the menace.
