At least 110 houses were washed away as there was heavy down pour in Baure and Garki villages in Baure Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The incident started around 6 am on Friday, and lasted for about five hours.
Some of these damages would have been avoided if the area had been well planned and managed by residents. Most of the places affected lacked good roads and drainage. It has been observed that most of the structures affected were constructed on waterways. Also where drainage exists, they were blocked by garbage as the communities are in the habit of dumping their wastes inside the drainage.
Most people affected by the rainfall have taken refuge with relations and neighbors.
One of the victims, Idi Abdu Garki, lost his four room abode in Garki village.
Another one, Ibrahim Sani Baure, lost four of his houses, goats and sheep in the flood.
The victims are appealing to the state government and local council to come to their aid.
The acting council chairman, Alhaji Mohammed Matazu, directed that immediate clearing of the market drainages be done.
He also constituted a committee to carry out the necessary assessment and make a report available for submission to the state government for needed assistance.
Consequently, it is necessary to always take precautionary measures by regularly clearing drain systems and ensuring environmental sanitation to allow for easy passage of water.
