About 16,000 people were reported fleeing across the border to escape the fighting that broke out on Thursday between armed forces and a rebel group in Sudan’s Blue Nile state.
The report says the people are believed to be fleeing to Ethiopia.
Antonio Guterres, U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR, appealed Saturday for an immediate end to the clashes.
A team of the UNHCR was sent to western Ethiopia to assess the situation.
A state of emergency have been declared on Friday by the nation’s president. He also fired Blue Nile’s governor after the clashes broke out.
