Some foreigners are believed to be assisting the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, to manufacture explosive devices and facilitate the supply of bombs and other explosive materials with which its sustains campaign of violence against the Federal Government.
This was revealed to security agencies after the confessions of some arrested members of the sect during interrogations.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.Gen. Onyeabor Ihejirika, also disclosed on Tuesday, that Boko Haram was receiving tactical support from foreign elements.
In a Third Quarterly Conference in Abuja, Ihejirika said, “It is definite that the youths who call themselves Boko Haram or terrorists receive training and possibly funding from some foreign elements. This is evident in the type of weapons that we have captured from them and from the expertise that they have displayed in the preparation of Improvised Explosive Devices. These are pointers to the fact that there is foreign involvement in the terrorism going on in Nigeria.”
He said that the type of weaponry and highly sophisticated telecommunications equipment seized from the Boko Haram members and the level of expertise that must have gone into the production of their Improvised Explosive Devices indicated that foreign elements were supporting the sect members.
Ihejirika assured Nigerians of the readiness of the Army to work alongside other agencies to ensure the security of lives and property.
He said that even as expectations of Nigerians from the Army were still high, the establishment was determined to ensure that all missions assigned it were effectively carried out.
He added, “This quarter has been particularly challenging in view of the numerous security incidents across the country, the most recent being the UN bombing by the terrorists here in Abuja. I want to emphasize that we have to be very frank and do a serious critique of our performances so that we come out with a solution that will aid our performances in future undertakings.”
Investigations are going on to unveil the foreigners believed to be assisting the violent Islamic sect.
