The president of UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, held talks on Monday with South African President Jacob Zuma, in the presence of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Jacob Zuma is on an official visit to the UAE leading a high level delegation from South Africa.
The President welcomed Jacob Zuma and the accompanying delegation expressing his wish that the visit will contribute towards strengthening relations of friendship between the two countries and will open wider horizons of joint cooperation in the avenues of economy and investment in the best interests of the people of both countries.
The talks dealt with the means of further developing the standing relations and cooperation between UAE and South Africa. They also exchanged views on current developments on the regional and international levels and issues of common concern.
The President asserted UAE’s keenness to strengthen relations with South Africa and benefit from its experience in the field of development and emphasized the country’s interest in the transfer of the economic knowledge SA has achieved in the fields of technology and industry through joint investment projects.
Zuma expressed happiness over the opportunity to visit the UAE and meet Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He also hailed the development UAE has achieved in various fields as well as its prominent place among the world countries thanks to the prudent policies of His Highness the President.
Zuma said that his visit to the UAE will help SA to find more opportunities for cooperation and partnership with the UAE, adding that this is visible from the potential, rapid and tremendous achievements in economic and political fields. The current visit is made with the aim of developing these relations in various fields, he stressed.
President Sheikh Khalifa and President Jacob Zuma also witnessed the signing of a number of agreements between the UAE and the Republic of South Africa in the presence of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The first agreement contained a memorandum of understanding on political consultations between UAE and South Africa and the second agreement called for the establishment of a joint committee. Both these agreements were signed by UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation in South Africa Ms Maite Nkoana-Mashabane.
The third agreement called for cooperation in the field of defense and was signed by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Minister of Defense and Military Veterans Dr Lindiwe Sisulu representing UAE and SA respectively.
The signing ceremonies were attended by Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Ruler’s Representative in the Eastern Region Sheikh Tahnoun bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, National Security Adviser Sheikh Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a number of other sheikhs and senior state officials and members of the delegation accompanying President Zuma.
President hosted a banquet in honor of President Zuma and the accompanying delegation.
