Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the former leader of Republic of Biafra passed away yesterday in a London hospital at the age of 78. The Igbo icon had battled an illness for months, due to the effects of a serious stroke he suffered late last year.
He was well known for serving as leader of the secessionist Biafra during a bloody civil war in Nigeria from 1967 to 1970. A graduate of Oxford university who earned a Masters degree in history, Ojukwu was a Military Governor of Eastern Nigeria before Biafra war.
He was married to Bianca Ojukwu (nee Onoh), an ex-beauty queen in Nigeria. He is survived by numerous children, including Emeka Odumegwu, Jr. and Okigbo Ojukwu, who is based in London.
