Nigeria: Police, ACN Brutalise Lekki Toll Gate Protesters

A peaceful protest held Saturday by activists and residents in Lagos against the introduction of toll fees on motorists plying the Lekki Highway soon degenerated to violence as officers of the Lagos State Police Command brutalised the defenceless citizens.

Report says thugs allegedly sponsored by the ruling party in the state, the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, suddenly showed up with machetes and sticks and started attacking the protesters in the middle of a peaceful protest. The protesters resisted the attacks.

However, Mobile Police officers soon arrived at the scene and started beating up the protesters and firing tear gas canisters at them. The officers also arrested several protesters and reports say one person was beaten to unconsciousness.

According to the report, some protesters were arrested and taken to an unknown destination. Fully armed officers were dispelled to quell the protest which was peaceful until the police moved in.

The Lekki Toll Road Concession is a public private partnership (PPP) scheme between the Lagos State Government and the LCC.

However, residents of the area believe that the collection of tolls on the road by the LCC amounts to unfair treatment and injustice.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG TO BUILD TOLL GATE IN THE HEART OF A CITY, WHICH MEANS THAT IF YOU HAVE TO DRIVE OUT OF YOUR HOME OR OFFICE TEN TIMES A DAY YOU HAVE TO PAY AT EVERY EXIT AND ENTRY. TOLLS POSTS ALL OVER SANE SOCIETIES ARE BUILT IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITY. NIGERIANS: GOVERNMENT AND INDIVIDUALS BEING EXTORTIONISTS AND EXPLOITERS DELIBERATELY SITED THE LEKKI TOLL GATE IN THE CITY CENTRE TO MAXIMIZE INCOME. HOW DO YOU PAY TOLL WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING OUT AND INTO YOU HOME? IT IS CRAZY!

WITH THE WAY THE POLICE IS BEING USED TO BRUTALIZE NIGERIANS WHO ARE OUT ON PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATIONS WHICH IS THEIR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT, IS A VERY SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS INFRACTION ON THE CIVIL LIBERTY OF NIGERIANS. NOT TOO LONG AGO SOME YOUTHS WERE CHASED AWAY WITH POLICE DOGS AS IF THEY WERE CRIMINALS, IN ABUJA WHERE THEY GATHERED TO REGISTER THEIR DISAPPROVAL OF THE IMPENDING PRICE HIKE ON PETROLEUM PRODUCTS. WITH THIS ACT OF POLICE OPPRESSION, IT IS APPARENT, THEREFORE, THAT DEMOCRACY AND DEMOCRATIC NORMS ARE FAST GIVING WAY TO TYRANNY AND DESPOTISM IN THE COUNTRY. I MUST, THEREFORE, USE THIS FORUM TO CALL ON THE NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION TO CALL THE ATTENTION OF NIGERIANS RULERS TO THIS VERY UNHEALTHY AND DISTURBING DEVELOPMENT IN THE COUNTRY, WHICH CERTAINLY IS DRAGGING THE COUNTRY BACK TO THE MILITARY ERA. PD

it’s very unfair for the government to do such. it’s just a way of trying to make things hard for the masses. the government should have a rethink before it gets out of hand and the government shld not just start this dispensation with polices that will make life unbearable for the public cos it’s going to say alot about the gov knowing well tha t this government is the best ever in the history of the country.
