It was a day of reckoning when nemesis finally caught up with Madam Toyin Oyinbo Eleja and her son, Lasun Abore as they were both caught by members of the Vigilante Group and Youths in Omu-Aran in the Irepodun Local government area of Kwara State for alleged illegal extortion and robbery on highways.
Africanspotlight gathered that the vigilante groups and youth in the community has decided to facilitate the arrest of the suspects after all efforts to get them arrested by the police proved abortive following the mounting of an illegal road blocks before, during and after the fuel subsidy protest in the state.
It was alleged that Lasun with his gangs usually mount road block along Ilorin- Omu-Aran express way for vehicle going to Abuja and Lokoja to extort money during the one week fuel subsidy removal protests and would not stop it even after the strike was called off.
Giving an account by some eyewitnesses, it was gathered that Lasun and his gangs assaulted a traditional ruler in the community who refused to pay his toll as they have collected from other road users.
Investigations further revealed that all efforts by the paramount chief of the community, the Olomu of Omu-Aran , Cheif Charles Ibitoye and elders in the town to caution the gang did not yield any fruit and they have refused to turn a new leaf as the police also failed to arrest him.
This was why the irate youth together with the Vigilante Group ganged up to confront him and the family, which led to a serious uprising in the ancient town.
Speaking with The African spotlight, one of the youths said that when they got to the house of the suspect, they recovered masks, police uniform, and three bags of Indian Helm among other dangerous weapons.
He further stated that, “The house was subsequently razed with the shop where the mother was operating ‘beer parlour’ by the aggrieved youths as the gangsters started shooting at the youth that were equally armed.
Lasun, along with his mother and fiancé, were marched naked to the palace of the royal father in the town, after they were captured by the youths.
The royal father confirmed the incidence and Divisional Police Officer in the community but the youths refused to hand over the suspects to the police for further investigations.
They said: “We do not have any confidence in the police officers in the town because the suspect was fingered in all the crime including armed robbery on banks that has being occurring in the community.”
Further probe into the matter revealed that the gangs usually pay the sum of N15, 000 to the Police in the community for every successful robbery operation.
The Police spokesperson in the state, Dobo Ezekiel confirmed the incidence noting that suspects were not in their custody because the DPO informed the command that it was a case of the community taking laws into their hands.
However, a senior officer in the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, disclosed that the suspects are being interrogated and investigated and after which the case would be transferred to the appropriate place for prosecution.
The traditional ruler stressed the need for peace and warned that the community will no longer allow criminals stressing that he has constituted a security committee among other communities in an effort to ensure security of lives and property in the neighbourhood.
