In a statement posted on its website Wednesday, FIFA said Japan was picked after it was decided that Uzbekistan could no longer organise the tournament ‘due to a number of logistical and technical issues’.
FIFA had formally confirmed Japan to host the event from Aug 18-Sept 8 on condition that the Japanese government guarantees it.
Speaking to reporters, Tenzo Okumura, vice minister of education said: “The government for its part wants to help organize a successful tournament especially after we saw Nadeshiko Japan’s great achievement.”
The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will be played from 19 August to 8 September 2012.
Ten of the final 16 teams have already qualified: Germany, Italy, Norway and Switzerland (UEFA); Japan (host), North Korea, China and Korea Republic (AFC); and Argentina and Brazil (CONMEBOL).
