At least four persons were on Tuesday killed and several others injured when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) which was planted along Lawan Bukar Street of Mafoni ward in Maiduguri metropolis exploded.
The incident which occurred on Tuesday afternoon at about 2.30pm caused many residents to vacate the area.
LEADERSHIP gathered that immediately the bomb exploded, men of the Joint Task Force (JTF) cordoned off the area. There ensued a severe clash between the JTF and the suspected bombers, which resulted in the burning of some houses around the area.
Confirming the incident to newsmen in Maiduguri, a member of the Red Cross who visited the scene said for people died in the blast and their remains have been evacuated to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Mortuary.
In a telephone interview with newsmen on the incident, the JTF Spokesman, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa said he was aware that a bomb blast occurred in Lawan Bukar/Mafoni ward of the metropolis, but could not give further details on the number of casualties.
