Olabisi Onabanjo University: The Final Acts Of Desperation

By Ogunjimi James Taiwo

Olabisi Onabanjo University “True peace is not merely the absence of tension; it is the presence of justice” – Martin Luther King Jr.

Today, June 21st, 2012 should have been the day when new executives of the Nigerian Association of Science Students(NASS) are sworn in. Unfortunately, due to the antics and acts of desperation on the part of the Dean of Student Affairs and some power-hungry students, the swearing in has been cancelled.

I speak, not as an aspirant, and not as a member of the Electoral commission, but as a concerned student and progressive comrade who has sworn never to keep quiet in the face of injustice.

For everyone who has constantly followed happenings in OOU, it will be clear that one of the problems of OOU, who can be held responsible for silencing (to some extent) the student movement and breaking up the union is the Dean of Student Affairs. He is a man who has succeeded in breaking the spirit of even the most dogged of comrades and using them against their fellow comrades and students.

I speak without any apologies and i stand as a living witness of the various acts of intimidation that the DSA has used time and time again against students who dared to speak up against injustice in the school. Ranging from threats of arrest to threats of expulsion, the DSA has it all in his bag of tricks.

The recent act of his happened today when the DSA in conjuction with the PSO summoned the Electoral committee members and threatened them with their studentship. For what? He wants the inauguration of new executives to be suspended ’till further notice’, and new nominations to be made void of the yet-to-be-sworn-in executives. My question is, why? What is the business of the DSA with who becomes the new excos? It is all a ploy to plant his own people in posts of authority so that he can forever keep the students under. This move should be rejected in its entirety, as an acceptance of this means selling the future of our union to the school management.

Asides that, it has become clear that the DSA is all out to suspend/expel Committee for the defence of human rights(CDHR) members in OOU. As a CDHR member myself, i wish to state that CDHR isn’t afraid of their threats. But one thing should be clear to them that any move to suspend/expel be it the NASS Executives, Electoral committee members or CDHR comrades will result in a revolt that will shake the faculty to its roots. Examinations are around the corner and any unnecessary move may jeopardize the examination as the students are solidly behind their representatives.

As for the power-hungry students who will do anything to attain positions of authority and who will do anything to hold on to power, my message to you is simple: THE END OF A TRAITOR IS NEVER GOOD.

As for the DSA, i call on all stakeholders in OOU, all stakeholders in Ogun state to rise up and challenge this man whose activities are threatening the new era that has been promised OOUites. The cases of violation of human rights, intimidation, victimization, e.t.c has to stop, else the school calendar is about to be disrupted again as students have been pushed to the wall, and if nothing is done to curb the DSA’s excesses, the fight-back won’t be good.

God bless NASS!
God bless OOU!!
God bless Ogun State!!!
