The suspected terrorists, who concealed the high volume Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in a plastic bag and neatly planted it inside the Fagge Mosque which has a capacity of about 15, 000 worshipers, have been arrested in Kano State.
Four of them were arrested half an hour after they were supposed to have set-off a bomb in the mosque in FageLocal Government. The Kano State Police Command has confirmed that the suspects are in its custody.
A source gave the names of the men to SaharaReporters as: MohammedSaidu Lawan, Salisu Adamu, Saminu Haruna, and Abdullahi Mohammed.
The prompt intervention of the anti-bomb squad drafted from Bompai Police headquarters averted what could have been the most deadly attack in the ancient city of Kano on Friday. The bomb was reportedly planted just some minutes before the start of Juma’at prayers.
Muslim faithfuls who had arrived at the mosque to observe the prayers quickly left when the heard about the discovery of the bomb placed inside the prayer house.
A source in the Police Anti-bomb unit said the situation created panic as many residents who were trooping-in for prayers decided to pray in other mosques.
The state police spokesman, DSP Rilwan Mohammad, confirmed the arrest of the suspects in a press statement on Friday.
Rilwan said the suspects were apprehended on Friday after they were caught depositing the explosives concealed in a plastic bag.
The Police expressed their gratitude to residents who raised the alarm about the device and said a full investigation into the matter has commenced.
The police commissioner urged people to be careful, especially worshippers observing their religion at mosques and churches.
“Worshipers should not be allowed to come inside places of worship with strange materials,” he further advised.
