Sounds of bomb blasts and sporadic gunshots were heard across the town at about 6pm, causing residents to panic.
Commissioner of Police Patrick Egbuniwe confirmed the incident last night.
The loud explosions and gunshots were targeted at the Federal Polytechnic Damaturu and the personal residence of the state governor.
The CP said the attackers were repelled from entering the school, noting that no damage could be ascertained in the meantime because the incident took place very late.
According to a Joint Task Force (JTF) source, who does not want to be named, three attackers were killed in the process and three arms were recovered.
According to the source, a structure at the polytechnic was razed but the attack was repealed by operatives of the Joint Task Force that rushed to the scene.
