Police spokesman Abu Emmanuel confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.
He explained that the deceased were on their way home from the market when the attackers who laid ambush, pounced on them and hacked them to death, using machetes.
He said that investigations had started although no arrests had been made.
He described the incident as `disheartening’, and wondered why people were still bent on shedding blood in spite of efforts to restore peace to Plateau.
Emmanuel called on the people of Riyom to exercise restraint and resist the temptation to take the law into their hands.
Mr. Simon Jok, a former Deputy Chairman of Riyom LGA, described the incident as “unfortunate and wicked“, and called on the authorities to “do something” about the constant attacks on Riyom communities.
“It is clear that we are under siege; government must be proactive to stem the trend,” he said.
NAN recalls that a week ago, attackers killed six persons at Tidiu village in Kombun district of Mangu Local Government. (NAN)
