Leading the defectors was Abdulkareem Rafiu, who claimed to be the Head of Bodyguards to the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola. He decamped to PDP yesterday, together with more than 2,000 of his supporters in Lagos State.
Mr Rafiu said: “I am leaving the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) because the party has been turned to Bola Tinubu’s personal property and I am tired of seeing Lagos being looted with impunity.”
Rafiu, popularly known as Otto, told journalists at the Lagos PDP secretariat after announcing his defection to the PDP that he was pained that ” 70 per cent of the landed properties belonging to Lagos State had been cornered by top members of the ACN saying; “the looting of Lagos State must stop!”
“Soon, the Alausa Secretariat will be sold to the man, but before that happens, we must all join hands to rescue Lagos from the hands of this Iragbiji man.
“I worked as Head of Fashola’s Bodyguards and during the 2009 rerun election in Ekiti State, I was seconded to Ekiti as Head of Bodyguards to Governor Kayode Fayemi. I also worked with Governor Rauf Aregbesola and I challenge them to deny my claims.
The defectors were officially accepted by PDP leaders at their secretariat in Ikeja, where the stalwarts boasted about their party’s popularity among the Nigerian public.
Former Deputy National Chairman of the party, Chief Olabode George and former Transport Minister, Ebenezer Babatope, received the defectors on behalf of the party.
George said he was pleased to know that many “people in the ranks of ACN are now seeing the light”.
Speaking further, he lamented the flood presently ravaging the state, describing it as sign of failure of the ACN government in the state, asking “Is Lagos going forward or moving backward?
Many PDP members expressed confidence that the party would win the state at the next general elections as a result of the defection.
