Witnesses said 10 people were killed on Friday as a suicide bomber detonated his bomb few meters away from the Shehu of Borno and the state’s deputy governor around 2 pm in Maiduguri.
The Shehu of Borno, Abubakar bin Umar Gabai Elkanemi, and the deputy governor of the state, Alhaji Zanna Umar Mustapha were the primary targets of the bomb attack.
The incident, which happened immediately after Friday prayers at the mosque in front of the Shehu’s palace, reportedly injured the ward head of Galtimari, Alhaji Lawan Makinta, and others in the Shehu’s entourage.
Witnesses said a youth of about the age of 15 was noticed walking towards the two dignitaries. The attention of the security men guarding the Shehu was drawn to him as he was approaching the two dignitaries suspiciously.
The guards quickly tried to shield him. In the process, the bomb went off, killing at least 10 other people in the vicinity and critically wounding six others.
JTF spokesman in the state, Lt. Col. Sagir Musa confirmed the incident but said only 5 people were killed and 6 others, including the two soldiers, wounded by the blast.
Musa said: “Five people have been killed and six others injured in the Maiduguri central mosque suicide bomb attack”
The area has been cordoned off by army officials.
