He died in his palace on Monday at the age of 102, having spent 56 years on the throne.
His Royal Majesty (HRM) Alhaji Aliyu Obaje was the paramount ruler of the Igala Kingdom in Nigeria.
He was the longest reigning First Class Traditional Ruler in Nigeria, the Attah Igala, His Royal Highness.
The late Attah Igala who was the chairman Kogi state tradition council and chairman Igala traditional council ascended the throne on November 2, 1956 as the 26th Attah Igala.
The Late Attah until his death was also the Chancellor, Moshood Abiola University.
In a statement signed by the Kogi State Governor, Captain Idris Wada, the Attah Igala Dr. Aliyu Ocheja Obaje, CFR, died in the afternoon of July 16, 2012, at the age of 102 years.
He held the title of Attah, Igala. Tha Attah’s palace (the seat of power in the Igala Kingdom) is located in the ancient city Idah.
On 2nd November 1956, he was installed the Attah of Igala. Thus he became the first literate Attah Igala. He was also the first Attah Igala to become a moslem. He was the first Attah Igala to reign for fifty years (1956-2006). His long reign has witnessed unparalled developments in his kingdom.
He published a book to commemorate the celebration of the Golden Jubilee of his reign as the Attah Igala. The book documents the social, religious, economic and educational development of Igalaland during his reign.
