About 15 members of the New York-based Nigeria Liberty Democratic Forum (NLDF) protested against bad governance and the presence of the Minister of information, Labaran Maku, at the 52nd Independence parade last Saturday. The protesters, led by Bukola Oreofe, an official of the group, marched among other colorful parade floats from 51st Street to the front of the Nigerian embassy on 44th street and 2nd avenue.
In their chants, the protesters demanded the minister to go back to Nigeria and work on making the country better before traveling abroad to celebrate, especially in ensuring that the country is safe for Nigerians at home to celebrate independence day publicly. They also accused Nigerian officials of corruption and insensitivity to the plight of the vast majority of Nigerians, especially the indifference attitude of the government towards the flood victims.
Nigerian officials later called the police with the hope of getting rid of the protesters. However, upon arrival, the policemen did not drive the protesters away, but they stood guard to ensure order.
At the end of the parade, Mr. Labaran went in the Nigerian building.
