Zambia arrests ex-information minister, three journalists

Police Jail Shikapwasha and Others Police in Lusaka have arrested and detained former Information and Broadcasting minister in the MMD government Lt. Gen. Ronnie Shikapwasha for alleged abuse of office.

Lt. Gen. Shikapwasha was arrested together with Freelance journalists Chanda Chimba III, Former Zambia Daily Mail deputy managing director Davis Mataka, and defunct Monitor and Digest newspaper owner Ngande Mwananjiti.

And joint government investigations team public relations manager Namukolo Kasumpa said Lt. Gen. Shikapwasha was charged with 2 counts of abuse of authority of office contrary to Section 99(1) of the penal code CAP 87 of the laws of Zambia.

“Chanda Chimba III has been arrested for 2 counts of unlawful printing and publication of a newspaper contrary to section 5(1 and 2) of chapter 161 of the laws of Zambia,” she said.

She said Lt. Gen. Shikapwasha directed the broadcasting of Chimba’s documentary series dubbed “Stand up for Zambia” against professional legal advice.

Police claim that two years ago Chimba unlawfully published a newspaper called “Stand up for Zambia” and a publication called “News of our Times” which were not registered at the office of the director national archives of Zambia. He was also found in possession of an accumulated total K611, 440, 433. 12 (K611 million) money believed to be proceeds of crime which he paid for private media and printing service to ZNBC and Zambia Daily Mail,” Kasumpa.

She said Mataka and Mwananjiti were charged with corruptly acquiring public property and revenue under the pseudo names John Allan Mugwida for Mataka and George Banda for Mwananjiti.

Kasumpa said they would all be released on police bond and will appear in court soon.
