AFCON 2013: Cape Verde, South Africa qualify for quarter finals

AFCON 2013 PANA – Hosts South Africa and debutants Cape Verde Sunday qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2013 African Nations Cup from Group A.

While the South Africans scraped through with a 2-2 draw against Morocco, Cape Verde went through after emphatically defeating Angola 2-1.

The matches were played simultaneously in Durban and Port Elizabeth.

In Durban, Morocco went up 1-0 on account of Issam El Adoua’s 10th minute goal but May Mahlangu drew level for the hosts in the 71st minute.

Morocco again went in front from a Hamza Hafidi goal in the 82nd minute before Siyabonga Sangweni made it 2-2 for the South Africans five minutes later.

The draw gave South Africa five points from three matches, having beaten Angola 2-0 earlier and drawn 0-0 with Cape Verde.

In Port Elizabeth, Cape Verde took the three points at stake to take its total to five points, having drawn its two previous games — 0-0 against South Africa and 1-1 against Morocco.

This means that Morocco and Angola are out of the competition.
