NO fewer than 10 people have been reported dead while property worth million were destroyed in the communal clash between two boundary communities; Offa and Erin-Ile, in the Offa and Oyun local government areas respectively of Kwara State.
Sources told The Graphic that the age long rivalry between the two communities engulfed at late hours of Monday when an indigene of Erin-Ile came to Offa to buy tiles and the vehicle he used in transporting the materials to his destination collided with another vehicle belonging to an indigene of Offa community.
The incident which resulted into serious argument and subsequently ensued into fracas while various interest groups of the duo warring communities took up the matter and personalized it.
Speaking with journalists in Ilorin on the unfortunate incident, the Police Spokesperson in the State, DSP, Olufemi Fabode, confirmed the presence of men and officers in the police in the crises ridden zones of the communities.
He noted that no casualty has since been recorded adding that the Commissioner of police in the state has ordered the deployment of 40 armed Mobile Policemen to patrol the nooks and crannies of the areas.
According to him, “Not only that, troops of armed police including the Divisional Police Officers, DPO, as well as Area commander in-charge of the areas have been put on standby to curb the re-occurrence of the saga.”
“These are communities that have things in common, they have inter-married each other and mostly they have common history and ancestral attachments, why now fighting?”, he lamented.
Fabode however urged the people of the area to ensure that peace reign in the two communities by working hand-in-hand with security operatives in order to ensure peaceful co-existence in the areas.
