Explosive devices were used to break into the banks’ halls by blowing open the electronic doors.
According to the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olufemi Adenaike, the gunmen numbering about 100 engaged the policemen on duty in a gun battle which led to the death of three of his men, adding that one of the gunmen also died and others escaped with bullet wounds.
Barely two days after ceasefire was declared, gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members Wednesday night invaded the headquarters of the Birin Gwari Local Government Area in Kaduna State.
It was gathered that about 20 gunmen few minutes before midnight attacked Birnin Gwari Police Station, burning vehicles and motorbikes.
The gunmen reportedly attacked the station and engaged the police officers in a heated gun battle which lasted for about two hours.
The attackers also set the police station on fire with the police officers trapped inside the station. Eyewitnesses indicate scores of policemen died in the attack and the police station was reported to have been completely razed.
The gunmen proceeded to set fire on Churches and Banks located along the Birinin Gwari – Lagos road. Churches and Banks located in the area were reportedly set on fire in the attack.
Casualty figures from the attack in not yet known.
