THE Kwara state Governor, Dr. Abdulfatah Ahmed has described the merging of some political parties under the auspices of All Progressive Congress (APC) as a normal political move that can never be of any threat to the People’s Democratic Parties, PDP, as the merging was not borne out of ideological persuasion.
Speaking on Thursday in Ilorin during the monthly interactive programme, “The Governor Explains”, Governor Ahmed said it would have been a major threat to the ruling party if the merger has been driven by any kind of ideology other than individuals and their positions. “If they are driven by ideology then there will be reasons for us to begin to think”, he said.
According to Dr. Ahmed merging of political parties is not alien to the political history of Nigeria as there were similar merging of political parties in the First and Second Republics. “Until Nigeria begins to drive ideologically based political issues then such merging will not bring anything positive to the polity. The APC, for now is just a realignment. No big deal”, he added.
On the performance of the Super Eagles at the ongoing African Cup of Nations in South Africa, Governor Ahmed said it was heartwarming that Nigeria has begun to wake from its slumber as a power house of football in Africa. “I am very optimistic that given their present strength the Super Eagles will win the African Nations Cup”, he predicted.
