THE WEST AFRICAN EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL

ADDRESS BY MR. CHARLES M. EGURIDU, HEAD OF THE NIGERIA NATIONAL OFFICE OF THE WEST AFRICAN EXAMINATIONS COUNCIL (WAEC), AT A PRESS BRIEFING TO ANNOUNCE THE RELEASE OF THE RESULTS OF THE MAY/JUNE 2013 WEST AFRICAN SENIOR SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION (WASSCE), ON WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7, 2013 AT THE WAEC OFFICE, YABA-LAGOS

Gentlemen of the media, on behalf of the Management and staff of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), I am pleased to welcome you all to this press briefing.

My heart is full of gratitude for your support, cooperation and contribution to the Council in its efforts to continually conduct credible examinations and award internationally-recognized certificates to the Nigerian child. The Council indeed believes strongly that the integrity of its examinations must be maintained at all cost.

Gentlemen of the media, the Council is working assiduously to improve its service delivery to stakeholders in the education sector. I want to use this opportunity to inform the general public, particularly candidates, that certificates up to the May/June 2012 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) diet, have been printed and dispatched to schools for collection by candidates. Also, certificates up to November/December 2012 WASSCE diets have been printed and are awaiting collection by candidates at WAEC Offices nationwide.

Candidates for May/June examination diets are advised to collect their certificates from their former schools, while those for November/December examination diets are advised to collect their certificates at WAEC Zonal, Branch or Satellite Offices in the states where they sat the examinations.

In addition, the Council also wishes to advise candidates who sat previous diets of the November/December General Certificate of Education Ordinary/Advance Levels (GCE O/A Levels), Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) (Private) and WASSCE (Private), who have not collected their certificates to do so at WAEC Zonal, Branch or Satellite Offices, not later than 31st December, 2013. Candidates who fail to collect their certificates after that date may be charged additionally for the custody of the certificates.

Gentlemen of the media, the closing date for registration for the November/December 2013 WASSCE (Private), is Friday, August 9th, 2013. In view of the public holiday which has been declared for tomorrow and the day after, the Council has decided to provide a window of opportunity for candidates whose results are being released today and who may want to register for the November/ December 2013 WASSCE (Private) because of their poor performance in the May/ June 2013 WASSCE. Accordingly, the Council has decided to extend the closing date for the November/ December 2013 WASSCE (Private) period to Tuesday, August 20th, 2013.

Gentlemen of the media, the conduct of the May/June 2013 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) diet was successfully concluded on May 17, 2013. Unfortunately, three personnel of the Council were brutally murdered by unknown gunmen while on their way from Yola to Maiduguri on official examination duty, during the conduct of the examination. I crave your indulgence to observe a minute’s silence for these three dedicated staff of the Council who died on active duty during the conduct of the May/June 2013 WASSCE.

Gentlemen of the media, may I use this opportunity, once again, to express our profound gratitude to our supervisors, invigilators, custodians and other ad-hoc personnel for their dedication to duty during the conduct of the May/June 2013 WASSCE. We sincerely wish to thank the Federal Government, as well as the security agencies particularly in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States for all the support rendered to the Council during the conduct of the examination. We equally want to sincerely thank the Federal and State Ministries of Education for their support in terms of facilities and logistics given to us during the conduct of the examination.

Similarly, the Coordination and Marking of candidates’ scripts for the May/June 2013 WASSCE took place between June 11 and July 3, 2013 at our marking venues all over the Federation. We thank our Chief Examiners, Team Leaders, Assistant Examiners and Checkers for their dedication and commitment during the exercise. We are also grateful to our host schools which we used during the marking exercise. They accommodated us and availed us of the use of their facilities despite their other commitments and challenges.

Today, gentlemen of the media, I am happy to announce the release of the results of the May/June 2013 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

A total of 1,689,188 candidates registered, for the May/June 2013 WASSCE, out of which 1,671,268 candidates, consisting of 920,416 male and 750,852 female candidates sat the examination. Out of the total number of candidates, 1,543,683 candidates, representing 91.38% have their results fully released, while 145,505 candidates, representing 8.62% have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors mainly traceable to the candidates and schools in the course of registration or writing the examination. Such errors are being corrected by the Council to enable the affected candidates get their results fully processed and released subsequently.

Of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 889,636 candidates (53.23%), obtained six (6) credits and above; 1,074,065 candidates, representing 64.26% obtained five (5) credits and above. In addition 1,225,591 candidates, representing 73.33 % obtained credit and above in four (4) subjects, while 1,353,273 candidates, representing 80.97% obtained credit and above in three (3) subjects. A total of 1,465,581 candidates (87.69 %) obtained credit and above in two (2) subjects.

We are unable to provide statistics of candidates who obtained credit and above in five (5) subjects, including English Language and Mathematics at this time, because many candidates in the North Eastern part of the country have partial results at the moment, due to security challenges encountered there during the conduct of the examination, particularly loss of scripts.

Furthermore, the results of 112,865 candidates, representing 6.75% are being withheld in connection with various cases of examination malpractice. The cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the Nigerian Examinations Committee (NEC) of the Council in due course for consideration. The Committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates through their schools.

A total of 2,176 cases of multiple entries also were discovered during the processing of the results. In line with the Council’s regulation, the entire results of all candidates who are guilty of this act would be cancelled.

A total number of 121 blind candidates registered for the examination. Out of this number, 117 blind candidates sat the examination. From this figure, 24 candidates, representing 20.51% obtained credit in five (5) subjects including English Language. Blind candidates don’t take Mathematics and Science practicals in WASSCE diets.

Candidates who sat the May/June 2013 WASSCE will be able to check the details of their performance on the Council’s results website: www.waecdirect.org within the next 24 hours.

Finally, gentlemen of the media, permit me to commend the staff of the Council, whose dedication to duty contributed immensely to the successes recorded during the conduct, marking and processing of the results of the May/June 2013 WASSCE. To our exceptional staff, I salute you all.

Gentlemen of the media, once again, on behalf of the Management and staff of the Nigeria National Office of the Council, I wish to thank you very much for honouring our invitation.

Thank you and God bless.

Dont fall victim to fraudsters. Instead learn from other people’s mistakes. Result Upgrading is not real, dont make that mistake like me. Someone told me that he is going to upgrade my chemistry in Waec 2014 but i found that all he want is money, he kip asking me to send money upon money but thanks to God, i realize his tricks. Its better to accept failure, failure doesn’t mean that is the end but what is more important is to rise up when u fall.
Dear internet ussers, i offer u dis wisdom dont be decieved by those who said he/she is going to upgrade your result for you.

Many do say upgrading is a scam and there is no truth about it honestly they
are 100% correct and also they are 100% wrong…WHY? When they are
saying no result can be edited, check it well they are trying to say that
THERE IS NO SOFTWARE YOU CAN USE, OR A WAY THROUGH
WHICH YOU CAN HACK WAEC DATABASE TO CHANGE YOU
RESULT AND THAT IS 100% CORRECT AND VERY TRUE When it
comes to upgrading of result, I dont upgrade using any software, hacking or
any magical mean because that is very very impossible!!!!! SO HOW DO I
GET IT DONE?WHEN YOU NEED SOMETHING IN NIGERIA AND YOU
HAVE YOU CONNECTIONS AND YOUR STRONG LEG TO GET IT
DONE, YOU WILL GET IT WITH EASE ASFAR AS YOU KNOW THE
RIGHT CHANNELYour result can be upgraded at the computation stage {I
mean after your result has been marked and it is been computed into the
database} People that program your result to be available on the internet are
people like us and not robot so imagine knowing one of them? even if you
have F9, changing it to A1 wont be a problem and that is why you see some
students that did well in their exams coming out with F9 OR D7 and you
might be suprised that “I DID THIS EXAM WELL WHY DO I HAVE D7?
A mistake might have been done by the person that program your
result…..Marking of your result are also done by teachers like us and not
robots, most of it are even marked by their children so all U need to achieve
result upgrading is A VERY VERY STRONG CONNECTION OF WHICH
    IS NOT A PROBLEM HERE
