The Lagos State Government has approached the Supreme Court to challenge the ruling of the Court of Appeal that freed Hamza Al-Mustapha.
Mr. Al-Mustapha, a former chief security officer to late military dictator, Sani Abacha, was discharged and acquitted by the Court of Appeal which ruled that he was not guilty of the murder of Kudirat Abiola, wife of Moshood Abiola, winner of the June 12 1993 presidential election.
Mr. Al-Mustapha and an aide of Mrs. Abiola, Lateef Shofolahan, were accused of the murder and prosecuted by the Lagos State Government.
The accused were initially found guilty by a Lagos High Court, before they were later freed by the Appeal Court.
Ade Ipaye, the Lagos State Attorney General, confirmed that the state had filed its appeal at the Supreme Court.
