Why Pastor Adeboye retired as Overseer of Redeemed Church, RCCG Nigeria

Pastor E.A. Adeboye on Saturday stepped down as the National Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, while he still remains the General Overseer.

He appointed Pastor Joseph Obayemi as its “National Overseer”.

Adeboye will now be G.O. Worldwide.

Announcing his retirement during a ministers’ conference Saturday morning, Pastor Adeboye said the reason he is retiring is because the Nigerian government has passed a law that General Overseers of churches must retire at the age of 75.

The new law in Nigeria, “Corporate Governance Code”, proposed in May 2015, limits the number of years heads of corporate organisations can stay in office. It is mandatory for the private sector.

The Code of Governance for Not-for-Profit entities is “Comply or Justify non-compliance.”

The man of God retired ahead of his 75th birthday on 2 March.

Pastor Adeboye said he will still be handling the monthly RCCG Holy Ghost Service.

Going by this law, it means Pastor W.F. Kumuyi of the Deeper Life Bible Church, who is already 75, will also retire soon.

The newly appointed GO was the Special Assistant to the General Overseer (SATGO) on Finance.

Mr. Adeboye also appointed Johnson Odesola, who was the Special Assistant on Administration and Personnel, as the church Secretary.
